Understanding ADHD in Children: Symptoms and Diagnosis

What's ADHD

ADHD is an acronym for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. It's a problem that occurs when a child is more hyperactive than the average child. The kid may struggle to pay attention. Sometimes, they're more impulsive, causing them to act without thinking or interrupt others who are talking. In girls, the condition often manifests without hyperactivity, but the child will be more likely to be inattentive, disorganized, or forgetful.

Symptoms

When we evaluate a child for ADHD in one of our offices, serving Melbourne & West Melbourne, FL, and the neighboring communities, we'll want to see if the kid is easily distracted. For instance, they could be focused on homework, but external stimuli can easily take their focus away.

The child may be forgetful. You may need to remind them repeatedly to perform a task. They may frequently forget about homework assignments. Some children with ADHD may struggle to remain organized and manage their time when it comes to schoolwork or extracurricular activities.

The kid may want to avoid tasks that require a high level of concentration and remain seated for an extended period.

You may notice that they make careless mistakes on homework and tests because they struggle to pay attention to minute details.

A child with ADHD may have trouble maintaining organization. They may frequently lose the items they need to complete a task, such as their pencil.

Diagnosis

If you notice your child has any of the aforementioned symptoms, we recommend you bring them in for a formal diagnosis.

Fortunately, the testing isn't invasive. Instead, it's just one of our pediatricians asking you a series of questions about your kid. If we're seeing your child has many of the issues mentioned, based on our diagnostic criteria, we may find they have ADHD.

We'll also take into consideration your youngster's medical history as we're making any diagnoses.
